In this Communimty Based Engineering unit, students engage in both science inquiry and engineering design within the context of the Boston subway system. Students will address the focus questions “What science and engineering do transportation professionals do?” and “What are some problems that subway professionals need to solve?” These range from profiles of real transportation engineers from the MBTA to a story describing how a student in a wheelchair rides the MBTA to school. Various unit launch materials can be used to establish the context and brainstorm possible problems that the subway system may be facing.
