Reservoir Rescue

The “Reservoir Rescue” unit is part of the larger unit, Community-Connected Elementary Science & Engineering. In the “Reservoir Rescue,” 5th grade students explore students explore key concepts of earth science and engineering in the context of a polluted, reservoir-feeding waterway in their local community. Over 12 class sessions, fifth-grade students integrate their understanding of the engineering design process and earth science concepts, like how water moves through our world, to generate multiple possible solutions to filter out pollutants before they can contaminate the reservoir. The teacher guide begins with a navigation guide that overviews each day of the unit, focus questions, NGSS and Massachusetts (MA) standards, and science and engineering practices (SEPs), followed by the detailed lesson plans and required resources.
